Apple plans to release iPad and MacBook models with a
Mini-LED display in the late 2020 and mid-2021 years. It was revealed by Ming-Chi
Kuo.
Kuo, mentioning the MacBook and iPad will use 10,000 LED
lights for its screen. That amount is a big improvement when compared to the
Apple Pro Display XDR screen carrying 576 LEDs. Each LED will be less than 200
microns in size.
The Panel will be between 10 inches to 12 inches for the
iPad Pro and 15 inches to 17 inches for the MacBook Pro. Given that medium-sized
OLED panels are now worth more affordable and easier to create, Apple is
expected to not wait until the MicroLED technology matures.
Although mass production of medium-sized OLED displays has
improved and the performance of an OLED wide color gamut is comparable to that
of Mini-LEDs, however Kuo believes that Mini-LEDs are Apple's first choice.
This avoids the burn-in problem as well as reducing the reliance on Samsung
that supplies the OLED display.
Apple is reported to be pointing to LG Display as its
company's main Mini-LED supplier with the help of Epistar, Zhen Ding, Radiant
Opto-Electronics, Nichia, Avary Holding, and TSMT. The technology will be first
available on the iPad series at the end of 2020 and will be introduced to the
MacBook Pro series soon afterward.
Because the technology giant from South Korea still occupies
the throne in the market of small to Medium OLED display panel. The Mini-LED
display will allow the device to come with a thinner body and lighter weight,
but still able to deliver a similar performance of the OLED panel.
