How to add birthday date to Google calendar

Forgot birthday friends or relatives can cause a less comfortable situation. Fortunately, in today's digital era there are many ways to be reminded of birthdays.

Most commonly, we get notified on Facebook. But more and more people are trying to get away from social networks (or don't add their birth date to their profile) so there's a risk you might miss that important day.

As an added layer of protection against such omissions, you can add birthdays to Google calendar.

Adding birthdays to your calendar sounds like a simple process but it's not as intuitive as you could imagine.

There are two main ways to add birthdays to your Google calendar. Betikut a step-by-step guide for each of them below.

Add birthdays to Google calendar through contacts

Google Calendar currently does not have native support for birthday notifications. So you have to use the calendar regularly to get birthday notifications.

Adding a birth date is not done within the Calendar application. Here's what you should do instead:

Open the contact you need to add your birthdate to in the Contacts app, tap on "Edit contact" and then under "More fields" at the bottom.
Scroll down until you find the field for the birthday and tap on the Date field to select a date. When it's finished, tap "Save".
Open the Google calendar app. Birthdays will appear after the calendar synced with contacts, but if you want to speed up the process, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner and then tap "Refresh". And voila! The birthday is there!

The same process can be used to add various important annual events that connect with your friends and family. From the menu that appears in step 2, instead of "birthdays", you can choose to add a warning to Google calendar or even any other special event you like.

Add Birthdays as recurring reminders

If you really need to remember the birthday, even if it's someone who isn't in your contact list or just wants a faster way to add a birthday reminder in Google calendar, here's how:

Open the Calendar app and tap the plus icon in the bottom right corner, then tap "Reminders."
Add "[Person name] birthday" or similar in the Reminder Text field and select a date. Then tap "No repeat" and select "Every year".
Tap Save in the top-right corner and you're done.
Keep in mind that you can't add reminders to past dates, so if your birthdays have passed this year, you should visit a date next year to add them.

You can also set this reminder using Google Assistant by saying "OK, Google, remind me of [person's name] birthday on [Date]" and choose to repeat it every year.
